"what is this? The rain started falling so heavily!"
That was the moment, just hours into our much-anticipated car camping trip, when we realized: this wasn't going to be easy. Forget the glossy Instagram posts; this was going to be raw, real, and unforgettable.
The journey had started with pure excitement. After weeks of planning our kitchen and bed setup, we finally hit the road for our first-ever long car camping trip. The best part? It was entirely unplanned. We decided to drive toward the Almora side, letting the beautiful, winding mountain roads dictate our destiny. As my husband said, the unplanned destinations are always the best—the unexpected joy is far greater than reaching a pre-decided spot.
We completed our errands—a quick stop at Nathuakhan Market for supplies, filling up the car, and checking the tires. Finally, we were surrounded by the serene valleys. Our little one, Shivraj, was thrilled, having been asking to go out and explore for ages.
The Weather Strikes Back
Our destination, somewhere near Kapileshwar Mahadev, was still miles away when the sky turned a dramatic shade of gray. The beautiful, cool weather we had been enjoying suddenly intensified.
We found a decent spot near a primary school in Garari, a location with a lovely view, and decided to call it a night. We scrambled to put up our tarp shelter. We knew the rain was coming, but we didn’t anticipate the fury: a sudden, heavy downpour accompanied by hailstones and strong winds.
"It’s not easy, this camping life!" I exclaimed, struggling to manage the rain-soaked tarp. Our shelter wasn't perfect, but we worked as a team, managing to secure it just enough to keep our bed setup dry inside the car.
The Battle for the Fire
The biggest challenge wasn't the rain, but the cold that followed. We desperately needed a fire, but how do you light wood when the world is soaked?
In a stroke of pure luck—a true miracle of the mountains—we found a large, partially burned log still smoldering nearby. This was our lifeline! My husband quickly chopped up more wood, securing a thick log that would burn through the night. The sight of the fire finally catching, fanned by our efforts, brought a massive wave of relief and warmth. Shivraj, our little master fire-starter, was delighted to see the flames.
With the fire roaring, the true magic of the night began.
Dinner by the Firelight
While my husband kept the fire going, I got the kitchen in order. I quickly cooked up some rice—a necessity for me and Shivraj!—while he took on the duty of chopping vegetables. He was cutting the onions, chilis, and potatoes, joking that this primitive setup was bringing back memories of his bachelor days.
"You’re reminding me of your bachelor life while camping with me?" I laughed.
Soon, the aroma of spicy aloo gobi (potato-cauliflower curry) filled the cold mountain air. I prepared the rotis, puffing up nicely on the hot surface. With a fresh coating of ghee and a squeeze of lemon, our simple meal—rice, roti, and hot curry—was a feast fit for kings.
Sitting there, under the stars, with the crackling fire keeping the damp cold at bay, every hardship of the day melted away. The view of the mist rising from the rain-drenched mountains was breathtaking. This is the real reward of an unplanned adventure: facing the challenges together and earning a perfect moment of cozy togetherness.
We finished our dinner and, even though the air was freezing, my husband was on dish duty—a small price to pay for the adventure! As the long day ended, we tucked into our car-turned-bedroom, ready for the next part of our journey.
What happens next? Stay tuned for the second part of our journey as we head towards the holy Kapileshwar Mahadev and explore more of these incredible, unplanned locations!
