Wagon R CNG Bed Setup

Let’s be honest: The Maruti Wagon R is a great city car, but nobody looks at it and thinks, "Wow, that looks like a comfortable place to sleep for a family."

Especially when you have a massive CNG cylinder taking up half the boot space.

When we decided to start car camping, we looked at roof-top tents, but they were too expensive. We didn't want to buy a new car just to sleep in the woods. So, I decided to solve the problem myself.

In this post, I am going to show you exactly how I built a massive 6ft by 4ft full-flat bed setup inside our Wagon R.

The best part? I used ZERO legs or complex supports. It’s simple, lightweight, and cost me less than ₹3,500.

The Big Challenge: The "CNG Hump"

If you drive a Wagon R CNG, you know the struggle. The rear seats fold, but they don't fold flat because of the cylinder. You end up with a weird slope that makes sleeping impossible.

I realized I needed a platform to bridge that gap, but I didn't want a heavy wooden frame that would ruin the car's mileage.

Material List: Keeping it Simple

I wanted this to be lightweight so I could install and remove it easily.

Here is exactly what I used:

  • 12mm New Plywood: I bought fresh sheets. 12mm is the "sweet spot"—strong enough to hold our weight but light enough to carry.

  • Carpet/Felt: To cover the wood for a premium feel.

  • Hinges: To make the board foldable for storage.

Total Cost: Approx ₹3,500 (Everything included).

The "Secret Hack": No Legs Required!

Most people build complicated wooden legs to support the bed near the front seats. I found a better way.

Instead of building legs (which take up storage space), I used the car's own seats as the support structure.

  1. The Boot Area: The plywood sits comfortably over the CNG area (we leveled it out to match the height).

  2. The Head Area (The Trick): This is where most people get stuck. Instead of using wooden legs, I simply tilt the front driver and passenger seats backward.

By adjusting the recline angle of the front seats perfectly, the backrest acts as a solid shelf. The plywood board rests directly on the tilted front seats.

This creates a rock-solid, 6ft by 4ft flat surface without a single vertical wooden leg cluttering the floor. This means we have tons of open space underneath for bags and shoes!

🛠️ Don't Have the Tools to Build It?

I know not everyone has the time, tools, or space to cut plywood and install hinges perfectly.

If you love this setup but don't want to go through the hassle of visiting hardware stores and doing the carpentry yourself, I’ve got you covered.

You can now order this exact, ready-to-use bed setup directly from our shop. It fits perfectly in the Wagon R CNG (2018 model & similar).

It’s hard to visualize exactly how the seats tilt to hold the plywood, so I recorded the entire process.

The Verdict: Kid-Approved Comfort

We were a bit worried about whether it would be spacious enough, but the 6ft x 4ft area is surprisingly huge for a small car.

My son, Shivraj, absolutely loves it. For him, the back of the car transforms into a giant play area and a cozy bed. If a restless kid can sleep comfortably through the night here, you know the setup is solid!

We added a mattress on top, and honestly, we sleep better in the Wagon R than we do in some hotels.
